Premier multifamily management firm to oversee trendsetting developer’s Spoke-branded projects in Charlotte and Georgia

Charlotte, NC (May 11, 2022) - RKW Residential, one of the nation’s fastest-growing multifamily management firms, is expanding into the burgeoning hotel-to-multifamily conversion sector with the assignment of four such projects from developer Blaze Capital Partners. RKW is overseeing new Spoke-branded conversions in its home base of Charlotte and Georgia.

Hotel-to-multifamily conversions gained steam during the pandemic as an efficient and cost-effective way to address the housing affordability challenge. Blaze has been at the forefront of the trend. With intense demand for rental product in major metropolitan areas throughout the nation, such conversions are now considered a long-term solution.

“We are excited about this new partnership with Blaze, which is transforming former hotel properties into vibrant apartment communities,” RKW CEO Marcie Williams said. “We are bullish on the viability of hotel-to-multifamily conversions. These Spoke-branded projects in Charlotte and Georgia are already generating tremendous pre-leasing interest.”

The four projects all involve the conversion of former extended-stay hotels.

In Charlotte, RKW is actively leasing the Spoke at McCullough Station and Spoke at Tyvola communities. Spoke at McCullough Station is a 124-unit community with studio apartments and one-bedrooms next to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.

The Spoke at Tyvola is the repositioning of a hotel as a 116-unit community with studio, one and two-bedroom apartments. It is located within the Southwest submarket of Charlotte. Blaze acquired both Charlotte properties in 2021 and is investing several million dollars in capital improvements into the buildings.

In Atlanta, Blaze is converting a hotel into the tech-oriented Spoke at Peachtree Corners. Located within Atlanta TechPark, Blaze is making major interior upgrades and incorporating smart-home and tech-based work-from-home space into the 92-unit community.

Blaze is also converting a hotel in Savannah’s historic downtown district into the 106-unit Spoke Savannah, a garden-style community in one of Georgia’s fastest-growing markets.

Multifamily industry leader earns prestigious recognition as part of organization’s 2021 class of inductees

Charlotte, NC (May 28, 2021) — RKW Residential President Marcie Williams was honored by the Apartment Association of North Carolina (AANC) for her significant contributions, accomplishments and service to the multifamily industry throughout her distinguished three-decade career. On May 27, the AANC inducted Williams into its Hall of Fame as part of the organization’s 2021 class.

AANC is a statewide organization dedicated to supporting its members through meaningful advocacy, education and services. Williams was nominated for its Hall of Fame by the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association (GCAA), an organization that she has substantially impacted through various leadership positions and roles. Her service with the GCAA dates back to the beginning of her multifamily career.

“Being selected for this incredible honor and joining my fellow 2021 inductees is truly humbling,” Williams said. “I am beyond grateful to the AANC selection committee and the wonderful people at GCAA who nominated me for induction. I also want to thank everyone at RKW for carrying out our people-first philosophy every day and supporting me in giving back to the industry and communities we serve.”

Since joining RKW during the multifamily management firm’s infancy, Williams has successfully built the firm from scratch to become a formidable player that successfully competes with industry giants. Today, RKW has 400 employees and a 25,000-unit portfolio that spans six states. It was recognized by Multi-Housing News as the nation’s second-fastest growing multifamily management company in the publication’s 2020 rankings.

RKW’s rise has given Williams an even greater platform – and responsibility – as an influencer in the multifamily industry. With that in mind, Williams aspires to create opportunities for those who seek a career in the industry and works closely with such individuals, mentoring many young women to give them the opportunity and confidence needed to replicate her own ascent in a multifamily property management sector that is historically male-dominated at the highest levels.

In her hometown of Charlotte, Williams has served on every GCAA committee, including but not limited to the organization’s Operations, Education, Membership and Programs committees. She was instrumental in the rebranding of the organization from the original Charlotte Apartment Association to properly reflect the overall growth of the Charlotte area into a vibrant region.

Among Williams’ proudest GCAA accomplishments is her role in the creation of its Education Foundation, which was launched in 2008 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The foundation’s mission is to support the education of multifamily professionals through course development (with focus areas including fair housing; landlord, tenant and real estate law; maintenance and repair; sales and marketing; liability; risk management; financial responsibilities; human resource management; safety; and security), technology, continual upgrades to its Education Center and designation scholarships to allow selected members to pursue CAM, CAPS, CAMT and NALP certifications.

Williams has been personally recognized by the Charlotte Business Journal over the last two years, first as an honoree in the 2019 Women in Business awards and as one of the area’s Most Admired CEOs of 2020. In October 2020, national publication Real Estate Forum honored Marcie as part of its annual “Multifamily Influencers” recognition.
