The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) today elected David Schwartz, CEO, Chairman and Co-Founder of Waterton, to serve a two-year term as the Council’s chair at its Annual Meeting.
As chair of the apartment industry’s leading voice, Schwartz summed up his goals for his term in a single theme—disruption. In his speech at NMHC’s 2020 Annual Meeting he addressed how the industry is facing great potential for disruption across six key issue areas: Sustainability and Resiliency, Diversity and Inclusion, Government Regulation, Housing Finance Reform, Innovation and Housing Affordability.
In his remarks Schwartz noted that, “Disruption offers both opportunities and challenges. Clearly the wave of emerging PropTech is exciting and may lead to evolving business models, but the disruption caused by the housing affordability crisis, namely increasing threats of rent control, threatens to derail our success.”
NMHC has a role to play in solving housing affordability challenges. To that end Schwartz announced that, “NMHC will take the lead in researching the causes of the affordability crisis, and we will create a roadmap of core principles to solve it in practical and productive ways that are sensitive to all stakeholders.”
“It is clear that the coming years will usher in a period of transformation and progress for the industry,” said Doug Bibby, NMHC’s President. “With David as chair, along with his fellow officers and the breadth and depth of all our members, NMHC is well-positioned to lead the industry through these disruptive times.”
